において is the written で, for a place, a time or a field

Kono bunya ni oite, kare wa daiichinin sha desu.

In this field he is the foremost figure.

For an abstract field において is nearly the only option

話し言葉(はなしことば)では、そちらを使(つか)います。

Hanashikotoba de wa, sochira o tsukaimasu.

In speech you use the other one.
