They looked as if they wanted to say something.

On たい it becomes たげ, reading anothers mind

書き言葉と文学に多く、会話では まれです。

Kakikotoba to bungaku ni ōku, kaiwa de wa mare desu.

Common in writing and literature, rare in speech.
