どころか denies the first term and replaces it with something stronger

休むどころか、仕事が増えました。

Yasumu dokoro ka, shigoto ga fuemashita.

Far from resting, I got more work.

The leap can go either way — the direction is not fixed

後段が前段より強くなければ成り立ちません。

Kōdan ga zendan yori tsuyoku nakereba naritachimasen.

It only works if the second term outdoes the first.
