あげく is a bad end after all that effort — wasted, in effect

Iiaratta ageku, futari tomo damatte shimatta.

They argued and argued, and then both fell silent.

The harder the effort, the emptier the ending reads

良(よ)い結果(けっか)には使(つか)えません。

Yoi kekka ni wa tsukaemasen.
