仕事(しごと)のかたわら、小説(しょうせつ)を書(か)いています。

Shigoto no kata wara, shōsetsu o kaite imasu.

Alongside my job I write novels.

かたわら is two things run in parallel over a long time, not momentarily

大学(だいがく)で教(おし)えるかたわら、研究(けんきゅう)を続(つづ)けています。

Daigaku de oshieru kata wara, kenkyū o tsuzukete imasu.

While teaching at the university I continue my research.

The first is usually the main occupation, the second the side one

ながら とは時間(じかん)の尺度(しゃくど)が違(ちが)います。

Nagara to wa jikan no shakudo ga chigaimasu.

It works on a different timescale from ながら.

ながら is this moment; かたわら is over years
