散歩(さんぽ)がてら、買い物(かいもの)をしてきます。

Sanpo gatera, kaimono o shite kimasu.

I will do some shopping while I am out walking.

With がてら both things genuinely happen — less of a main-and-extra than ついでに

挨拶(あいさつ)がてら、近況(きんきょう)を伝(つた)えました。

Aisatsu gatera, kinkyō o tsutaemashita.

I passed on my news while saying hello.

It joins a noun or a verb stem — a different attachment from ついでに

やや古風(こふう)で、手紙(てがみ)に残(のこ)っています。

Yaya kofū de, tegami ni nokotte imasu.

A touch old-fashioned, and it survives in letters.

In speech ついでに is the natural choice
