兄(あに)にひきかえ、弟(おとうと)はよく働(はたら)きます。

Ani ni hikikae, otōto wa yoku hatarakimasu.

Unlike his brother, the younger one works hard.

にひきかえ contrasts two and carries the speakers judgement

去年(きょねん)の不振(ふしん)にひきかえ、今年(ことし)は好調(こうちょう)です。

Kyonen no fushin ni hikikae, kotoshi wa kōchō desu.

In contrast to last years slump, this year is strong.

The two must be comparable, or the contrast does not stand

に反(はん)して が中立(ちゅうりつ)なのと対照(たいしょう)的(てき)です。

Ni hanshite ga chūritsu na no to taishōteki desu.

It stands against the neutral に反して.

に反して merely states the contrary; にひきかえ judges as well
