The Kanji Pronunciation Trap

Kanji Pronunciation Trap

kanji-readingboth

Reading a kanji with the pronunciation from your first language

Check the furigana and use the Japanese reading

You will recognise many kanji while their Japanese reading is nothing like the Chinese. This is where Chinese learners both gain and lose the most marks.

  • ❌ 梅雨 read as méi yǔ (Chinese) → ✅ つゆ (tsuyu)
  • ❌ 上手 read as shàng shǒu (Chinese) → ✅ じょうず (jōzu)
  • ❌ 大丈夫 read as dà zhàng fu (Chinese) → ✅ だいじょうぶ (daijōbu)

Confusing に and で

に/で Particle Confusion

particleboth

Not knowing when to use に and when to use で

に marks where something exists; で marks where an action happens

One of the most common particle errors among Chinese learners.

  • ✅ 図書館に本があります (the book exists in the library)
  • ✅ 図書館で勉強します (the studying happens in the library)
  • ✅ 教室に学生がいます (the students are in the classroom)
  • ✅ 教室で勉強します (studying in the classroom)
  • particle-distinction

Confusing が and を

が/を Particle Confusion

particleboth

Using を for every object and forgetting the cases that take が

を marks an ordinary object, but 好き, 上手, わかります and the potential form take が

Chinese makes no such distinction, so learners tend to use を for everything.

  • ❌ 日本語をわかります → ✅ 日本語がわかります
  • ❌ 寿司を好きです → ✅ 寿司が好きです
  • ❌ ピアノを上手です → ✅ ピアノが上手です
  • ❌ 日本語を話せます → ✅ 日本語が話せます(可能形)

Word-by-Word Translation

Word-by-Word Translation

generalboth

Translating a passage one word at a time while reading

Grab the key information and the overall sense instead of translating word by word

Word-by-word translation is slow and prone to misreading. N4 reading asks you to extract information quickly under time pressure.

  • Time yourself: read and grasp the gist within 3-5 minutes
  • First pass: skim the whole thing
  • Second pass: read the key sentences closely
  • Practise understanding in Japanese rather than translating everything

Passive Listening

Passive Listening

generalboth

Playing the audio without actively working to understand it

Listen actively: blind listen → check the text → shadow

Listening practice is not background music; it needs active participation.

  • Step 1: without the book, listen once and get the gist
  • Step 2: with the book, listen closely and pin down every word
  • Step 3: shadow the audio, imitating pitch and rhythm
  • Do not skip the shadowing — it is the fastest way to improve

Input Without Output

No Output Practice

generalboth

Only reading and listening, never doing the exercises

Do the exercises — you need output practice

Getting from "I know this" to "I can use this" takes output. The exercises are N4 exam questions in miniature.

  • Do Exercise II straight after finishing each lesson
  • Do not just read the answers — write them out
  • Redo the ones you got wrong until you fully understand them
  • Always sit the mock test at the end of the unit
