電気(でんき)をつけたまま寝(ね)てしまいました。

Denki o tsuketa mama nete shimaimashita.

I fell asleep with the light still on.

まま is a state left standing, often one that should have been changed

靴(くつ)のまま入(はい)らないでください。

Kutsu no mama hairanaide kudasai.

Please do not come in with your shoes on.

A noun takes の. This is the rule in a Japanese home and many venues

言(い)われたままにやりました。

Iwareta mama ni yarimashita.

I did it exactly as I was told.

With に it means exactly so, adding no judgement of your own
