買い物(かいもの)のついでに郵便(ゆうびん)局(きょく)に寄(よ)りました。

I dropped by the post office while out shopping.

ついでに puts the main errand first and the extra one after

出(で)かけるついでに、これも出(だ)しておいて。

Dekakeru tsuide ni, kore mo dashite oite.

Post this too while you are out.

Asking with it makes the favour sound light

主(しゅ)目的(もくてき)のほうが小(ちい)さいと、失礼(しつれい)に聞(き)こえます。

Shumokuteki no hō ga chiisai to, shitsurei ni kikoemasu.

If the main errand is the smaller one, it sounds rude.

先生に会うついでに買い物する would insult the person you came to see
