〜得る／〜得ない

それは十分(じゅうぶん)あり得(え)ます。

Sore wa jūbun ariemasu.

That is entirely possible.

得る is possibility in principle, not personal ability

そんなことはあり得(え)ません。

Sonna koto wa ariemasen.

That simply cannot happen.

あり得ない is the form you actually hear, for a flat denial

読み方(よみかた)は二(に)通(とお)りあります。

Yomikata wa futatōri arimasu.

There are two readings.

The positive takes either; the negative is fixed as えない
