V-る + まえに

寝るまえに本を読みます。

Neru mae ni hon o yomimasu.

I read before bed.

The verb before まえに is always plain form, whatever the main tense

食事のまえに手を洗います。

Shokuji no mae ni te o araimasu.

I wash my hands before meals.

A noun needs の before まえに

日本へ来るまえに日本語を勉強しました。

Nihon e kuru mae ni nihongo o benkyō shimashita.

I studied Japanese before coming to Japan.

Even with a past main clause, まえに keeps the plain form
