趣味(しゅみ)は 本(ほん)を 読(よ)むことです。

Shumi wa hon o yomu koto desu.

My hobby is reading.

V-る + こと turns the action into a noun so it can fill は…です

母(はは)の 趣味(しゅみ)は 花(はな)を 育(そだ)てることです。

Haha no shumi wa hana o sodateru koto desu.

My mother’s hobby is growing flowers.

A full object phrase can sit in front of こと

趣味(しゅみ)は 音楽(おんがく)を 聞(き)くことです。

Shumi wa ongaku o kiku koto desu.

My hobby is listening to music.

趣味は音楽です is also fine, but it names the thing, not the activity
