Keiki wa kaifuku shitsutsu arimasu.

The economy is gradually recovering.

つつある is a change underway, stressing the process more than ている

この伝統(でんとう)は失(うしな)われつつあります。

Kono dentō wa ushinaware tsutsu arimasu.

This tradition is being lost.

Used in reporting and commentary for a broad trend

瞬間(しゅんかん)的(てき)な動作(どうさ)には使(つか)えません。

Shunkanteki na dōsa ni wa tsukaemasen.

It cannot take an instantaneous action.

死につつある works; 着きつつある does not — there must be a process
