にもかかわらず has the second half hold in spite of the first

努力したにもかかわらず、結果が出ませんでした。

Doryoku shita ni mo kakawarazu, kekka ga demasen deshita.

Despite the effort, there was no result.

It is formal, and turns up constantly in news and reports

のに より客観的で、感情が薄いです。

Noni yori kyakkanteki de, kanjō ga usui desu.

More objective than のに, with less feeling in it.

のに complains; this one merely states the gap
