このままでは事故(じこ)になりかねません。

Kono mama de wa jiko ni narikanemasen.

At this rate there could well be an accident.

かねない flags a possibility, and only a bad one

油断(ゆだん)すると、失敗(しっぱい)しかねない。

Yudan suru to, shippai shikanenai.

Let your guard down and you could fail.

It warns ahead, with the risky condition stated first

かねます と形(かたち)が似(に)ていますが、意味(いみ)は逆(ぎゃく)です。

Kanemasu to katachi ga nite imasu ga, imi wa gyaku desu.

It looks like かねます but means the opposite.

かねます is cannot; かねない is might — the polarity flips
